GPRS-based power wireless meter reading system solution

This paper presents a power wireless meter reading system that leverages the SIM100 GPRS module and the LR100 control processor to enable efficient data transmission and intelligent management of electricity meters. The system utilizes the GPRS network for real-time communication between the meters and the data server, while also incorporating GSM as a backup channel to ensure reliability in case of GPRS network instability. This dual-channel approach significantly reduces the risk of data loss or delays. The implementation of GPRS technology in industrial applications offers an effective solution for smart metering systems, providing broader coverage and lower costs compared to traditional private networks. The proposed system integrates the SIM100 wireless module with the Wuhan Lanrui LR100 control module to create a robust and scalable wireless meter reading solution. The system is designed to meet the communication needs between the electricity meter and the data server. It operates using a limited transparent transmission mode, where the LR100 module filters and processes incoming data to eliminate redundancy and distinguish between query and control commands. Communication is established via the SIMCOM SIM100 module through a mobile gateway, supporting both TCP/IP and UDP/IP protocols. Additionally, the fault-tolerant features of the LR100 module and the GSM backup channel help maintain stable operation even during GPRS network fluctuations. In terms of hardware design, the LR100 module plays a central role in managing data transmission and intelligent control. It receives data from the server through the transmission module, processes it, and sends query commands to the meter via the RS485 interface. It can also control the meter’s I/O ports for intelligent operations. Once the meter responds, the data is processed by the LR100 module, which then transmits relevant information back to the server while handling alarms and control tasks based on the meter's feedback. The system includes three serial ports for different functions: - **Serial Port 1** is used for system configuration, allowing users to set parameters such as the server’s IP address, port number, and communication protocol (TCP/UDP) via a PC-based configuration tool. - **Serial Port 2** connects to the SIM100 GPRS module, enabling communication through standard AT commands and extended commands. This port facilitates data transmission and reception over GPRS or SMS. - **Serial Port 3** supports RS232/RS485 communication, ensuring reliable data exchange with the electricity meter and enabling terminal responses. GPIO (General Purpose Input/Output) interfaces are used to implement intelligent control functions, such as alarm detection and power-off management, through the intermediate circuit. Due to the high number of available GPIO pins and the ease of programming, this design allows for flexible future expansion and customization. Overall, this system provides a reliable, cost-effective, and scalable solution for wireless meter reading in industrial environments, offering enhanced performance and stability compared to conventional methods.
