In a major development for the semiconductor industry, the first phase of TSMC’s Fab18 facility has been successfully laid in the Southern Taiwan Science and Technology Industrial Park (STSP). This marks TSMC's fourth 300mm wafer fabrication plant in Taiwan and is set to begin producing chips using its groundbreaking 5nm process. The new facility is expected to be fully constructed by Q1 2019, with equipment relocation starting soon after. Initial trials are scheduled for Q2 2019, and full-scale production of 5nm chips is anticipated to begin in early 2020. The second phase of Fab18 will commence in Q3 of this year, with mass production planned for 2020. The third phase is set to begin in Q3 2019, with volume production expected to start in 2021. Once all phases are completed, Fab18 will have an annual capacity of 1 million 300mm wafers, significantly boosting TSMC’s manufacturing capabilities. TSMC chairman Jack Lee, who is retiring in June, attended the event as part of his final official engagement. He emphasized that Fab18 represents TSMC’s commitment to future growth, innovation, and its strong ties to Taiwan. The investment in 5nm technology is estimated at NT$700 billion (around RMB15.2 billion), with Fab18 alone accounting for over NT$500 billion (approximately RMB10.08 billion). Currently, TSMC employs more than 10,000 people in STSP, and once Fab18 is fully operational, it will create over 14,000 additional jobs in the region. The 5nm FinFET process is designed to deliver superior performance for both high-performance computing and mobile applications, leveraging EUV lithography to reduce complexity and chip size. In addition, TSMC reaffirmed that its upcoming 3nm plant will not be built in the United States.
