In a major milestone for the semiconductor industry, the first phase of TSMC’s Fab18 facility in the Southern Taiwan Science and Technology Industrial Park (STSP) has been successfully launched. This marks TSMC’s fourth 300mm wafer fabrication plant in Taiwan and is set to begin production on its groundbreaking 5nm process. The construction of the new facility is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2019, with equipment installation starting soon after. Initial trials are scheduled for the second quarter of 2019, and full-scale 5nm production is anticipated to begin early in 2020. The second phase of Fab18 will start this year, with mass production expected to commence in 2020. The third phase is planned for the third quarter of 2019, with volume production set to begin in 2021. Once fully operational, Fab18 will have an annual capacity of 1 million 300mm wafers, significantly boosting TSMC's manufacturing capabilities. TSMC Chairman Lee Jong-hee, who is set to retire in June, attended the event as a final gesture of his long-term commitment to the company. He emphasized that Fab18 symbolizes three key promises: TSMC’s dedication to future growth, continuous innovation, and support for Taiwan. The investment in 5nm technology is estimated at NT$700 billion (around RMB152 billion), with Fab18 alone requiring over NT$500 billion (approximately RMB100.8 billion). Currently, more than 10,000 employees work at STSP, and once Fab18 is fully operational, it is expected to create over 14,000 new jobs. This expansion underscores TSMC’s ongoing commitment to both technological leadership and regional development. TSMC’s 5nm FinFET process is designed to deliver exceptional performance for both high-performance computing and mobile applications. For the first time, EUV lithography is being used to simplify multi-exposure processes and reduce chip size, enhancing efficiency and performance. In addition, TSMC reaffirmed that its upcoming 3nm plant will not be built in the United States. According to previous statements from Lee, construction of the 3nm facility is expected to start in 2020, further solidifying TSMC’s position as a global leader in advanced semiconductor manufacturing.
