Frisco launches Waze citizen connection system: view street closure and traffic accident information

According to reports from international media, the Texas Chapter of ITS America honored Frisco, Texas, with an intelligent transportation award. This recognition was given in acknowledgment of four innovative transportation initiatives aimed at reducing traffic congestion and enhancing road safety. These projects showcase Frisco's commitment to leveraging technology for a more efficient and safer urban environment.

One of these initiatives is the "Closest To" scheduling system, which Frisco introduced last November. After implementing this system, the response time for both the Frisco Police Department and Fire Department to emergency calls decreased by 20%. The system integrates GPS and GIS technologies with the Urban Public Safety Dispatching System to automatically determine and dispatch the most suitable response team for each emergency call, ensuring faster and more effective assistance.

Another key project is the Incident Management Efficiency Assessment. This system requires dispatchers to log the time when an incident is first reported, when it is resolved, and when the first responder arrives on scene. By tracking these metrics, Frisco has significantly improved its response efficiency during traffic accidents, reducing the time needed to clear incidents and minimizing traffic delays caused by accidents. This approach also helps prevent secondary collisions, making the roads safer for all users.

Frisco is also pioneering real-time traffic signal data sharing. As the first city in Texas and second in the United States to adopt this technology, Frisco enables vehicles to "communicate" with traffic lights. By the end of last year, the city had partnered with Transportation Technologies to connect 122 traffic signals to their cloud platform. This system processes traffic signal data and sends it directly to compatible vehicles. For example, certain Audi models are equipped with a "traffic light information system," allowing drivers to view real-time signal status through their vehicle’s head-up display, improving navigation and reducing unnecessary stops.

In addition, Frisco has launched the Waze Citizen Connection System. Through the Waze app, residents can stay informed about street closures, traffic accidents, and other important updates in real time. This tool not only keeps citizens better informed but also encourages community involvement in maintaining smooth traffic flow throughout the city.
