Intel-Mobileye zooms out and takes the driverless acceleration weapon
In the fast-paced world of autonomous driving, every major player is racing toward the top. Whether it's a traditional automaker or a tech giant, each has its own roadmap for the future. But who truly leads the pack? According to Navigant Research’s 2018 ranking of autonomous driving technology, companies were categorized into four groups: Leaders, Competitors, Challengers, and Chasers. Since Intel acquired Mobileye in August 2017, the two have been working closely together, integrating their technologies and pushing forward with industry-wide deployments. At the recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Intel and Mobileye showcased their latest advancements in self-driving technology, reinforcing their dominance in the field.
One of the key innovations from Mobileye is REM (Road Experience Management), a system that leverages crowdsourced data to provide real-time, high-accuracy mapping. By 2018, an estimated 2 million vehicles are expected to be equipped with REM, including models from BMW, Nissan, and Volkswagen. Compared to traditional mapping methods, REM offers more precise positioning for autonomous vehicles, which is crucial for safe and reliable navigation.
Professor Amnon Shashua, CEO of Mobileye, explained that REM operates in three stages: collection, aggregation, and positioning. During the collection phase, data such as road signs and lane markings are gathered through crowdsourcing. This data is then compressed to reduce costs and bandwidth usage—only about 10KB per kilometer is needed. In the aggregation phase, all the data is compiled in the cloud to create a detailed Roadbook™. Finally, this Roadbook is used for precise positioning, achieving an accuracy of within 10cm, which significantly improves driving decisions.
What’s particularly impressive is that REM can be embedded directly into the EyeQ chip of a car’s front camera. These cameras not only serve as intelligent agents but also collect dynamic data. At CES, Mobileye announced the deployment of Mobileye8 Connect™ on thousands of vehicles. These cars will gather information about city streets and infrastructure, helping to build high-precision maps through REM—an essential component for full autonomy.
With millions of vehicles already equipped with Mobileye’s ADAS systems, the company has built a vast network of real-time data updates and diverse data sources. This allows self-driving cars to know exactly where they are and where they need to go, making navigation safer and more efficient.
Another significant advancement is the new integrated platform launched by Intel and Mobileye at CES. It combines two EyeQ5 chips, an Intel Atom® C3xx4 processor, and Mobileye software, delivering powerful computing performance while maintaining low power consumption. This balance is crucial for the next generation of autonomous vehicles.
Intel recently released comparative data showing that the deep learning performance of the EyeQ5 is 2.4 times that of competing products. Professor Shashua emphasized that efficient computing is essential for autonomous driving, especially for L4 and L5 vehicles. As electric vehicles become more common, power efficiency becomes even more important. Intel and Mobileye’s focus on low power consumption and high efficiency ensures that their solutions are both cost-effective and scalable.
Beyond just technological innovation, Intel and Mobileye are committed to delivering real-world value today while preparing for the future.
