STMicroelectronics, a global leader in semiconductor solutions, has introduced the third generation of its FlightSense laser distance sensors based on its advanced technology. The new VL53L1 sensor features a groundbreaking optical lens system integrated at the module level, marking a significant advancement in performance and functionality. This innovation allows for enhanced photon detection, improved ranging accuracy, and support for new features such as multi-object detection, long-range glass cover crosstalk immunity, and programmable multi-zone scanning. The VL53L1 integrates a 940nm VCSEL light source, a processor core, and SPAD photon detectors within a compact 4.9 x 2.5 x 1.56mm package. Its internal microcontroller manages all ranging functions and runs advanced digital algorithms to reduce power consumption and optimize battery life for mobile devices. This makes it ideal for use in robotics, user detection systems, drones, IoT devices, and wearable technology. Eric Aussedat, General Manager of STMicroelectronics Imaging Products, stated: “With hundreds of millions of time-of-flight sensors shipped globally, the FlightSense series is already embedded in over 70 smartphone and consumer electronics models. The third-generation VL53L1 brings even greater performance and opens up new application possibilities, including human presence detection, while enhancing existing sensor capabilities.†The VL53L1 can complete a measurement in just 5ms, making it suitable for high-speed applications like smartphone autofocus. Compared to the first generation, its detection speed has doubled, and the maximum range has increased to 4.5 meters—matching the hyperfocal distance of many 21MP lenses. This improvement ensures better performance in imaging and depth sensing applications. Thanks to its innovative architecture, the VL53L1 can detect multiple objects simultaneously and subdivide its SPAD sensor array into smaller zones. This enables stereo vision calculations for dual-camera systems and provides essential spatial data for basic depth mapping. Additionally, the sensor’s patented algorithms and direct time-of-flight design offer superior resistance to crosstalk, allowing compatibility with a wide range of glass materials and design styles. For ease of integration, the I2C-based VL53L1 comes with comprehensive software drivers and technical documentation. The product is now available for purchase and is set to redefine the standards in next-generation sensing technologies.
