Sina Finance News reported on February 8, 2016, that ZTE and the Cleveland Cavaliers celebrated the Chinese New Year at their home stadium. This marked a historic moment as it was the first time a Chinese company sponsored an NBA event. The celebration featured a dragon dance, acrobatic performances, and a baby dressed in traditional Chinese attire, creating a vibrant cultural atmosphere. ZTE’s CEO, Cheng Lixin, expressed his hope to bring Chinese culture to the U.S., emphasizing that the goal was not only to win the American market but also to capture the hearts of the people.
Since 2007, ZTE has partnered with several NBA teams, including the Rockets, Warriors, Knicks, Bulls, and Cavaliers, aiming to connect Chinese and American audiences through sports. This strategy has proven successful, with brand awareness increasing by 34% year-on-year, and expected to reach 40% soon.
The Cleveland Cavaliers, one of the most globally recognized NBA teams, sought to expand their influence in China through this partnership with ZTE. Both parties emphasized their shared values and commitment to community service. During the event, Cavaliers CEO Len Komorski mentioned that players like LeBron James have already launched Sina Weibo accounts to engage with Chinese fans, and more international stars are expected to follow.
In an interview, Cheng Lixin explained that ZTE chose to sponsor the NBA Chinese New Year event to promote Chinese culture in the U.S. He quoted President Xi Jinping’s message about mutual connection between China and the U.S. and highlighted the positive response from both American and Chinese audiences. The event was seen as a symbol of Sino-U.S. cooperation and mutual benefit.
Komorski added that Ohio has long had trade ties with China, and events like the NBA Chinese New Year help strengthen relations between the two countries. The game included various Chinese elements, such as T-shirts with “Happy New Year†messages, red envelopes, and traditional performances.
When asked why ZTE chose the Cavaliers, Cheng said the team shared similar values, such as striving for excellence and being fan-centered. He also noted that ZTE’s sponsorship of other NBA teams led to significant growth in brand awareness and market share, with over 2.3 million viewers in the U.S. last year. This year, the reach is expected to grow even further, with 1.45 billion people worldwide able to watch games featuring ZTE-sponsored teams.
