Should the new MacBook Pro be spoiled? Different views in the industry

Tencent Digital (Wen Xin) According to Cult of Mac, Touch Bar MacBook Pro may be the fastest selling Apple MacBook Pro model ever, but many fans are not satisfied with it.

Compared to previous generations of products, the Touch Bar MacBook Pro is thinner and lighter, and its storage device data transfer speed is the fastest among all Macs ever. But its price is also much higher, removing the traditional USB-A interface and SD memory card slot. At present, most users still use the USB-A interface.

Cult of Mac invited two guests to discuss the changes in the design of the Touch Bar MacBook Pro and whether the new MacBook Pro was screwed up by Apple.

Luke Dormehl: The biggest news for IT this week is the dissatisfaction with the new MacBook Pro.

Critics claim that the new MacBook Pro is too expensive and processing power is not strong enough, and Apple should not eliminate the USB-A interface and SD memory card slot. To be honest, I was puzzled by this reaction - it was not just me who had this idea. The reality is that while people call the new MacBook Pro a major step backwards, it is not

The reality is that the new MacBook Pro has achieved considerable success. According to a report released by a market research company last week, the new MacBook Pro broke sales records of previous notebooks, resulting in higher revenue than any other notebook released in 2016, reaching a 12-inch MacBook revenue for the past year and a half. 78%.

The new MacBook Pro is favored by consumers. The reason why it has been spit-tempted by users is the same as Hollywood blockbusters: Because it is so successful, there are always a few fans who want different products.

People can be dissatisfied with certain aspects of Apple products, but given that the new MacBook Pro is Apple's most successful computer product for several years, it is hard to say that it has made a serious mistake in this product.

Killian Bell: I know that the new MacBook Pro has been a success and there is little criticism of it at the moment.

I previously praised the new MacBook Pro's Touch Bar and my opinion hasn't changed—I think it's quite exciting. But for the overall new MacBook Pro, I think fans have the right to express their dissatisfaction. The reason is as follows:

First of all, it is overpriced. The entry-level 13-inch Touch Bar MacBook Pro costs $500 more than last year's entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro. Obviously, Apple believes the Touch Bar is worth $500, but if you consider that you don't need $500 to buy an iPad Air 2 Even a Mac mini, such a high price seems unreasonable.

I am pleased that this year's new MacBook Pro graphics capabilities have improved. Upgrading to Intel Skylake processors is also satisfactory, but for some professional users, the maximum 16GB of memory is not enough. I know that more memory means shorter battery life because the Skylake processor does not support low-power memory higher than 16GB. However, why does Apple not provide more models, let consumers decide whether they need a full battery life or more memory?

Then there are compromises that users have to take to choose the new MacBook Pro. Similar to the 12-inch MacBook, the new MacBook Pro is only equipped with a USB-C interface, the traditional USB-A interface is eliminated, and the SD memory card slot often used by photographers is also eliminated. If you do not purchase an adapter, few users can easily use the new MacBook Pro.

Apple will always eliminate obsolete technology, use newer and better standards. I understand Apple's approach. However, when it came time to eliminate floppy drives, optical drives, and FireWire, it chose a better time. USB-A and SD memory cards are not going to be wooded. They are still far from being “end of life” and have not affected our work. Why can't Apple leave a USB-A interface?

I suspect that Apple was forced to modify the MacBook Pro design in the face of pressure from fans and investors. For years, Apple has not introduced revolutionary computer products. Everyone is expecting it to launch important new products. I think Apple will worry that if it does not take some controversial measures - such as removing headphones, it will be criticized for innovation is not enough.

Luke: I don't think that you and I have different opinions on this issue, but I still think that you have a partial view. First, the price of the new MacBook Pro is really high, but the large amount of bookings indicates that the price is not too high. As a user, I definitely want to spend as little as possible on equipment, but the market shows that this price is acceptable to consumers. If Apple's product price is higher than the market affordability, its sales will not be so good.

The problem is that the major dissatisfaction with the new MacBook Pro is professional users - these users have been declining over the past few years and they do not represent the majority of users.

In this era, it is easy for people to make different voices on the Internet, but Apple does not need to please them because of the “noise” these users send. Apple is in a situation where it is "difficult to get right and wrong," and it has been criticized for its lack of innovation while being approved to go too fast.

Again, I don't think these customers are frustrated with the new MacBook Pro. I like Apple's new MacBook Pro that demonstrates its interest in attracting professional users. However, when all data indicates that the new MacBook Pro is popular, it is hard to say that Apple is wrong.

Kilian: I disagree with the statement that the new MacBook Pro meets the needs of “most consumers”. When users need to insert an iPhone, mobile hard disk, monitor, or SD memory card, the new MacBook Pro is stretched. Users must first buy an expensive adapter - if you want to connect a monitor and an SD memory card, users may even need to purchase more than one adapter. Do users love this Apple product experience?

I do not think that removing features such as the USB-A interface is a correct decision. The new MacBook Pro is an “anti-textbook” that focuses on features. I don’t think Apple should adopt this strategy on a professional-oriented computer.

I do believe that if Apple continues to "obsess over it," it will be abandoned by fans. Photographers, video editors, and other creative workers all expressed on Facebook and Twitter that they will switch to Windows computers that are more powerful and have more features (such as touch screens). They are less expensive and do not require users to do more. compromise. There are not many MacBook Pro fans currently switching to the Windows camp, but there will be more in the future.

Many people think that Apple is currently very successful and unlikely to fail, but the experience of companies such as Blackberry proves that this is not the case.

Luke: Compared with the BlackBerry is completely inappropriate, it failed because it is no longer innovation, not trying new technologies. I said at the beginning of this article that professional users are not dissatisfied but they may be aware that the new MacBook Pro is not for them. The Apple Mac user base is much larger than ever, and it is impossible to attract all these users at the same time.
