Google Earth VR struck home and traveled around the world to become a reality

I deeply breathe in the vast expanse of vision, and then continue to divorce the earth. In the end, I can only see the Earth in space. Then I saw the gorgeous galaxy and countless stars.

Virtual reality did allow me to see some incredible scenes, but in the past few years, I have tested several consumer-grade VR devices and are no longer feeling fresh. However, the arrival of Google Earth's VR version really made me wonder once again. This software is more powerful than any “Room Scale” system for games or applications designed for SteamVR. After the experience, I really want my family and friends to come and experience it, let them wear a helmet and experience it. You can explore the feeling of the world through your door and view the landscape anywhere on the globe from any angle.

The Google Earth VR version is currently available for free download for HTC Vive users and will be familiar to users who have previously used Google Earth. You can grab the earth, zoom in and out of any place, and when you zoom in on a location, you can see a more detailed map of the real scene. However, this VR version of Google Earth shows a wider range of features. Through this program, the 3D drawing content shows the panoramic view from various angles of the user's location.

For example, I chose the free flybridge near Seattle’s CenturyLink Stadium from the map, opened the application, floated over the earth, and used the Vive wand to follow the prompts. With a button you can zoom in and let me get closer to what you see, and another button can be reset. By operating me to rotate the Earth to North America, then the United States, then Washington, until I get close enough distance to trigger VR perspective. The previous Google Maps was only a bird's-eye view. Now, my perspective is the same as that of the horizon. Through the operation, I descended from the sky to the ground and I saw the perspective as if I were standing on the street myself. This is where I think Google Earth's VR version is the coolest place. When I arrived at the Seattle football stadium, I thought it would be fun to be able to walk on foot, but I could really do it. Through adjustments, I feel like I was really on the 50-yard line and I have a feeling of playing in a rugby match.

This feeling is very interesting, mainly because the geometry inside the stadium has been accurately rendered, as is the Seattle baseball field in the next block. Google Earth has already entered 3D image materials into its database. These images certainly not only come from photos taken by high-altitude satellites. The purpose of Google is to allow you to experience the feeling of being “immersive”.

But to be honest, some of Google Earth's VR content still looks very bad. Squashed geometry and blurred textures make some real-life scenes unrecognizable. However, if you stand near a 1:1 ratio of buildings, landmarks, or national parks, you may lose your way. The 360° panorama gives you a sense of the exact proportion of the surrounding landscape, helping to distinguish between those that are less clear. However, this level of detail does not apply to using Google Earth VR to experience most non-Western countries. Finding a fully rendered geometric pattern in a U.S. city will be much more effective than elsewhere.

Google Earth VR also uses intelligent algorithms that allow users to feel comfortable in a rotating and twisted environment. Use the Vive handle as a pointing device and grabber to convert your ratio or position in the program, and the field of view can be shrunk to a small periscope to try, narrowing the field of view allows you to reduce the vertigo feeling in flight mode. The system allows the user to quickly grab and move the map and present the moving scene in front of you from the perspective of the flight.

The pre-loaded recommended coordinates are displayed in a simple menu interface. These recommended locations are some very spectacular spots, suitable for new users browsing Google Earth. The list has many famous attractions like Big Ben and Yosemite National Park. There are some strange coordinates, such as the burning people in the desert, and even some outer space, so that you can float in the air to enjoy the total solar eclipse. The “Travel” tab can be selected on the interface, and the system will automatically take the user to visit various theme tourist attractions on the earth in a comfortable manner. Through the experience I feel very comfortable, you can display world-famous attractions in 3-5 minutes.

However, Google Earth’s worst experience with VR is that it is impossible to enter cities, landmarks, or other custom coordinate names on the interface. If you want to look at your childhood home, you will have to grab the planet and choose where to find it by roads, landmarks and terrain. After a period of hard work, although he took some detours, he finally found his childhood home. Google Earth VR can display city names and landmark names, but roads and smaller details are not marked. So, once you find a place, it's best to bookmark it so that you can arrive quickly next time.

There are many areas where this software needs improvement. For example, the Statue of Liberty and Fenway are not perfect. However, this kind of experience is very cool. It flies over and walks through various buildings and shuttles between scenes. It takes only a few clicks to get to where you want to go. Simply using the flight mode will fascinate you, but Google also said that the software currently only supports HTC Vive users exclusive.
