Harbin Engineering University set up its own marine culture hall to officially open a special VR multimedia experience zone

On October 22nd, Harbin Engineering University hosted the opening ceremony of the Ocean Culture Center, aiming to raise national awareness about the oceans, deepen understanding of marine environments, and foster a broader societal interest in oceanic knowledge and conservation. The event featured a range of exhibits and interactive experiences designed to engage both students and the public. During the ceremony, notable figures such as Man Shentang, a deep-sea hero from Tang Jialing, Zhu Jindeng, captain of the Xiangyanghong 09, and Li Mingchun, a special adviser to the museum, donated significant cultural and historical items related to marine studies. These contributions enrich the collection and highlight the importance of preserving and promoting oceanic heritage. The Kazakh Marine Culture Museum spans 379 square meters with an extension line of approximately 200 meters. The exhibition area includes 402 square meters of display walls, showcasing 431 images, including specially created illustrations of the seafaring era, ocean divisions, and underwater topography. Among the more than 50 physical artifacts are four rare snail specimens, soil samples from Huangyan Island, seawater from Diaoyu Island, sand from Yongxing Island, and mineral samples collected by Zhanglong in hydrothermal zones. The collection also features water samples from the Mariana Trench, one of the most mysterious and unexplored parts of the Pacific Ocean. Visitors can also experience a virtual reality (VR) zone where they can watch immersive underwater videos, explore coral reefs, and even "navigate" the Liaoning ship or "claim" the Diaoyu Islands by raising a flag. This interactive feature brings the ocean to life in a way that traditional exhibits cannot. The center is organized into four main sections: Natural Oceans, Humans and Oceans, Maritime Rights, and Building Ocean Powers. Each section tells the story of the ocean’s beauty, human interaction with the sea, the development of maritime law, and China’s growing role in oceanic exploration and technology. The goal is not only to educate but also to inspire future generations to contribute to the nation's maritime ambitions. According to the project director, the Ocean Culture Center serves as a vital educational tool for students and faculty, encouraging them to look beyond technology and focus on the broader mission of building a strong marine nation. The center also aims to raise public awareness of ocean-related issues, particularly in terms of maritime rights and ocean culture. Looking ahead, the center plans to digitize its exhibits, making marine culture accessible to people across the country through online platforms. This initiative will ensure that the message of ocean conservation and awareness reaches a wider audience.
