**How to Properly Store Antibodies for Long-Term Use** As the end of the year approaches, many customers reach out to us with questions about how to best preserve their antibodies. If you’ve purchased a batch of antibodies, you may be wondering: "Can I still use them next year?" "How should I store them to maintain their effectiveness?" Let’s take a closer look at the best practices to ensure your antibodies stay effective for as long as possible. When you receive an antibody, it's important to handle it carefully from the moment it arrives. First, always centrifuge the vial at 4°C, 12,000 rpm for 3 minutes (or longer if the volume is less than 50 µL). This step ensures that all the antibody material is collected at the bottom of the tube, preventing any loss due to sticking to the sides or lid. Whether it's in liquid form or lyophilized powder, this process helps maintain its integrity. After centrifugation, you can proceed with dispensing the antibody. For most ProSci antibodies, the recommended storage temperature is either -20°C or -80°C. However, unless specified otherwise, -20°C is usually sufficient, and there is no strong evidence that -80°C offers better preservation. It’s also important to divide the antibody into smaller aliquots to avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles, which can damage the antibody's structure and reduce its binding efficiency. Here are some key tips for optimal storage: 1. **Aliquot the antibody** into small volumes (at least 10 µL per aliquot) to minimize evaporation and wall adsorption. 2. **Store reconstituted antibodies at 4°C** if not used immediately, rather than freezing them again. 3. **Use working solutions on the same day** they are prepared, and do not store them for more than 24 hours, even at 4°C. 4. **Avoid placing antibodies in the door of the refrigerator**, where temperature fluctuations are more common. 5. **Never use dry ice for shipping**—this can cause unnecessary freeze-thaw events that degrade the antibody. Most antibodies can be stored at 4°C for up to 1–2 weeks without affecting their activity. During transportation, they are typically shipped at 4°C to prevent degradation caused by repeated freezing and thawing. If dry ice is used, the antibody may arrive frozen and will need to be thawed before use, which adds an extra cycle that could affect performance. Additionally, many antibodies contain sodium azide (0.02% w/v) to prevent microbial contamination. While this is generally safe, it can interfere with certain downstream applications. If needed, sodium azide can be removed via dialysis or filtration using a membrane with a molecular weight cut-off of 14 kDa. Since sodium azide has a very low molecular weight (65 Da), it can be effectively removed without affecting the antibody itself.
