Can Google's new VR glasses beat Samsung's GearVR?

Tencent Digital (Compiled: Hamish) Although the media has been advocating "the upcoming virtual reality technology revolution," in fact, ordinary consumers are still unfamiliar with these technologies. Head-mounted devices such as the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift are expensive and need to work with a powerful computer; at the same time, there are some so-called "entry-level" virtual reality devices that can be used with a mobile phone, but the performance is decided. They are hard to bring to the user a truly immersive experience. Samsung Gear VR is a product between the former two. Google Daydream View recently pointed out that it is also aimed at this intermediate market. Just as Google has just released Pixel and Pexel XL, Daydream View will also become a strong opponent of Gear VR in the virtual reality market. Let's compare the two products.

design

Google said one of Daydream View’s biggest features is “comfort”. Most of the virtual reality devices available on the market today were made of plastic and rubber. They not only had unexpected appearance but also were uncomfortable to wear. In this regard, Google designed Daydream View with the idea of designing clothes. This product is made of soft, lightweight fabric (Google has not announced a specific material), and the mask part supports removal and cleaning. In contrast, the surface of the Gear VR is a plastic blasted material and the mask is lined with a rubber material. Both devices support eyewear users.

Daydream View's design philosophy is "comfortable" and "easy to use." From this design concept, Daydream View has no cable connection. The user only needs to slide the mobile phone stuck in the device and fasten the buttons, and the mobile phone and the device can be connected in a wireless manner. And Gear VR users need to connect the mobile phone and the device through the micro-USB interface.

In terms of device operation, Google used different ideas again. Daydream View comes with a simple controller with two buttons. This controller is equipped with a somatosensory sensor, so the user can operate the target through gestures and menu navigation. Gear VR is equipped with a touchpad with arrow keys and confirmation keys. This touchpad supports third-party controllers. However, due to the lack of uniform standards, many virtual reality operations cannot be accomplished with third-party controllers.

performance

Since Google has not released the Daydream View monitor configuration, we cannot compare the resolution and refresh rate of the two screens. Ultimately, these configurations will be related to the phone configuration. Google Pixel has a 1080p screen and Pixel XL has a 1440p screen.

Currently only Daydream View's mobile phone only Pixel and Pixel XL two, but Google said the device will support more mobile phones in the future. On the other hand, Gear VR supports Samsung Galaxy series phones, including the S7 or S7 Edge, both of which are equipped with 1440p screens.

Since Pixel and S7 have similar configurations, we believe that the experience of the two virtual reality devices will also be closer.

software

Gear VR uses a "blocky, flat" interface design, the entire navigation process is quite easy, but the only drawback is that you must use the touchpad operation. At present, we have not yet used the real machine of Daydream View, so it is hard to say which product is operating better.

Gear VR supports the Oculus online store. There are many excellent games in this store, but there is a lack of high-quality software. So far we have not yet seen such software as Netflix.

Google has ported many outstanding applications to Daydream View. Users wearing this device can watch 3D video content from YouTube and experience famous tourist attractions in Google Street View. Daydream View does not plan to lag behind in the game. Many popular VR games have indicated that they will land on this platform, including EVE: Gunjack.

price

As an entry-level device, the price of the two products is not expensive: Gear VR is priced at 99 US dollars, has now begun sales; Daydream View priced at 79 US dollars, will start on October 20 pre-sale, officially shipped in November . If you purchased a Google Pixel or Pixel XL phone, you will receive a Daydream View for free. Samsung also offers similar promotional strategies.

Conclusion

The current entry-level virtual reality market has been monopolized by Gear VR, and the forthcoming Daydream View will undoubtedly become its strong opponent. Since we are still experiencing Daydream View for a while, its soft texture and excellent software seem to be more attractive than Gear VR. Of course, it will not be until November that the game will be unveiled.
