Thor Trucks Launches ET-One Electric Truck to Challenge Tesla Semi Truck
The Tesla supply chain is now fully established. The Gigafactory has managed to produce half of the world's lithium batteries in just one year and continues to roll out new electric vehicles. Recently, Tesla received its largest order since the reservation period began, signaling a bright future for the company.
One of the most significant announcements this year was the official launch of the Tesla Semi, an all-electric truck. At a press conference, Elon Musk revealed that the Semi will have a maximum range of 500 miles (around 804 km), a cargo capacity of 36.29 tons, and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 5 seconds when unloaded. If everything goes smoothly, the Semi could be mass-produced as early as 2019.
However, despite not being in mass production yet, the Semi has already faced some competition. A Los Angeles-based startup called Thor Trucks has unveiled a design sketch for its own all-electric semi-trailer truck, aiming to capture some of the potential customers who might otherwise choose the Tesla Semi.
Thor Trucks' current prototype is called "ET-One." It resembles Optimus Prime from Transformers and is expected to hit the market in 2019. According to the company, the ET-One will have a range of 300 miles (about 482 km), a maximum load capacity of 40 tons, and a powertrain ranging between 300 to 700 horsepower. The price tag is $150,000.
Moreover, the maintenance cost per mile for the ET-One is only 40% of that for traditional diesel trucks, and fuel costs are just 30% of those. This makes it an attractive option for companies looking to cut expenses and reduce their environmental impact.
Despite these promising features, analysts believe that Thor Trucks faces a tough challenge competing with Tesla in the short term. With limited capital and technology, the company has opted not to include an autonomous driving system for now. Instead, Thor Trucks aims to collaborate with other automakers to create a win-win situation rather than direct competition.
Indeed, it will take time before Thor Trucks’ electric trucks can directly compete with the Tesla Semi. Although the Semi hasn’t entered mass production yet, Tesla’s brand influence and strong R&D capabilities have already attracted numerous orders.
Earlier this month, Anheuser-Busch, the parent company of Budweiser, announced an order for Tesla’s electric trucks. The beer giant pre-purchased 40 electric trucks, though the specific models remain undisclosed. Sisko also placed an order for 50 electric trucks, which, while small compared to its fleet of 7,000 vehicles, aligns with its sustainability goals.
Just yesterday, Tesla announced its biggest order yet for the Semi. Carneel, the senior director of supply chain for Frito-Lay in North America, confirmed to Reuters that PepsiCo ordered 100 Semi electric trucks this week. Pepsi plans to use these trucks to transport snacks and beverages between production plants and distribution centers. If the trucks can indeed travel up to 800 kilometers as claimed by Musk, the company may expand its delivery radius accordingly.
