More cow than OLED! Samsung 150-inch micro-LED TV is about to debut

It's worth noting that Samsung is deeply committed to advancing next-generation display technology. While the industry was fully embracing OLEDs, Samsung made a bold move by shifting its focus away from OLED TVs and investing heavily in micro-LED technology. To accelerate this transition, the company acquired PlayNitride, a leading developer based in Taiwan, signaling its long-term vision for the future of television displays. Compared to traditional OLEDs, micro-LEDs offer significant improvements. The individual LED units are smaller than 100 microns, which not only helps prevent screen burn-in but also extends the lifespan of the TV. Additionally, micro-LEDs allow for thinner designs, improved energy efficiency, and superior brightness, response time, resolution, and overall image quality—outperforming OLEDs in nearly every aspect. According to recent reports from Korean media, Samsung is expected to showcase or even officially launch a micro-LED TV at CES 2018. The model could be as large as 150 inches, demonstrating the company’s ambition to push the boundaries of home entertainment. Samsung has a history of unveiling innovative TV models at CES, and introducing micro-LEDs would fit perfectly into that tradition. However, despite the impressive technology, micro-LEDs still come with a high price tag. This means they’re likely to remain a luxury option for high-end consumers for the foreseeable future. For reference, Sony previously displayed a 55-inch micro-LED TV five years ago, but mass production hasn’t taken off yet. As the market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how quickly micro-LEDs can become more affordable and widely adopted. For now, Samsung’s move shows its confidence in the technology and its determination to lead the next big shift in display innovation.
