More cow than OLED! Samsung 150-inch micro-LED TV is about to debut
Samsung has shown a strong commitment to next-generation display technology. While the industry was busy adopting OLEDs, Samsung took a bold step by discontinuing its OLED TV line and shifting focus to micro-LED technology. To accelerate this transition, the company acquired PlayNitride, a leading developer in micro-LED technology based in Taiwan.
Compared to OLEDs, micro-LEDs offer significant improvements. The LED units used in micro-LEDs are smaller than 100 microns, which helps eliminate burn-in issues and extends the lifespan of the display. These panels are also thinner, more energy-efficient, and deliver superior brightness, faster response times, and higher resolution. In terms of overall performance, micro-LEDs outperform OLEDs in nearly every aspect.
According to a recent report from Korean media, Samsung is expected to showcase or even officially launch a micro-LED TV at CES 2018. The model could be as large as 150 inches, making it one of the most impressive displays of the event.
It’s no surprise that Samsung often uses CES as a platform to unveil new TV technologies. Introducing micro-LEDs at this event makes perfect sense, given the company’s leadership in display innovation.
However, micro-LED technology is still in its early stages. The production costs remain extremely high, so it’s unlikely to become mainstream anytime soon. It will likely target only the high-end market. For reference, Sony demonstrated a 55-inch micro-LED TV five years ago, but mass production hasn’t happened yet. This shows that while the technology is promising, it’s not yet ready for widespread adoption.
With such advancements, it's clear that Samsung is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in television display technology. Whether it’s a full product launch or just a demonstration, the 2018 CES is an important milestone for the future of home entertainment.
