BYD new energy vehicles and fuel vehicles _ 2017 sales volume reached a new high
In the past century, fuel vehicles have dominated the automotive industry, but they are expected to gradually fade out of the historical stage by the middle of this century, replaced by new energy vehicles. This transition is not a mere speculation. Several European countries, including the Netherlands, Norway, and France, have already announced plans to ban fuel vehicles between 2025 and 2040. As the world's largest auto market, China is also aligning itself with global trends in the automotive industry.
Over the past year, BYD has demonstrated strong performance in both new energy and traditional fuel vehicles. From January to November, the company sold a total of 96,617 new energy vehicles. In December alone, models like the Song DM, Qin, and Tang exceeded 20,000 units in deliveries. Meanwhile, even fuel vehicles saw steady growth, with the popular seven-seat Song MAX gaining significant traction, achieving over 25,000 orders in December. The vehicle was awarded multiple honors, including "Most Beautiful Independent MPV" and "Most Popular MPV of the Year." Additionally, the five-star SUV family, including the Song, Yuan, and S7, saw a 15% increase in sales, while the F3 model continued to exceed 10,000 units per month.
BYD has consistently led in the global new energy market, with its market share rising to 13% by the end of last year. In 2017, the company’s new energy vehicles were sold across more than 200 cities on six continents. Domestically, over 50% of sales came from non-restricted cities, breaking through limitations imposed by double-limit policies and local subsidies. This success has helped accelerate the widespread adoption of new energy vehicles. Moreover, BYD's new energy offerings now cover the mid-to-high-end segment priced between 130,000 to 300,000 yuan, capturing nearly 70% of the market and solidifying its position as a leader in the industry.
Looking ahead, 2018 promises to be an exciting year for BYD. With the successful launch of the Song MAX, the company is set to introduce a full lineup of Dynasty models. The iconic Dragon Face design will become a hallmark of the entire Dynasty series. Additionally, new models like the next-generation Tang are generating considerable buzz, signaling a wave of innovative products to come.
Beyond performance, intelligence and connectivity are key pillars of BYD's strategy to build a stronger Chinese automotive brand. The BYD Auto Wisdom Ecology Institute is forming strategic partnerships with top global companies to transform vehicles into mobile smart terminals. This vision aligns with the broader trend of integrating technology into everyday transportation.
BYD’s achievements in 2017 reflect its internal strengths and the ongoing development of its electric future strategy. While 2017 marked a strong foundation, the real breakthrough is expected to coincide with the maturing cycle of China’s new energy market. The road ahead looks promising, and BYD is well-positioned to lead the next phase of innovation and growth in the automotive industry.
