2017 top ten "scientific" rumors
In 2017, Baidu, in collaboration with the Beijing Science and Technology Reporter Editorial Association, unveiled the Top Ten "Science" Rumors of the year. These myths covered a wide range of topics, from food safety to health and even space-related claims. Among them was the widely circulated rumor that "plastic rice" is made from seaweed fans, which sparked fear among consumers. Another claim suggested that watermelons can last for 400 days due to preservatives sprayed on them. There were also rumors about blood tests detecting cancer, ineffective rabies vaccines, and the idea that freezing can cause arthritis.
Other myths included the belief that you shouldn't sit in your hair for months, and the claim that "a drop in human health" could be linked to certain factors. In addition, there were rumors related to hot topics, such as the idea that the left brain controls images while the right brain handles responsibility, the existence of aliens on the back of the moon, and the use of anti-gravitational wave radiation suits. One particularly popular rumor claimed that Zhejiang University had developed a "Quantum Stealth Garment."
At the event, renowned scientists and experts, including Academician Quan Guangzheng from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, food safety expert Chen Junshi, researcher Zhang Shuangnan from the Institute of High Energy Physics, and chief scientist of the "Eye Eye" satellite project, addressed these myths. Through logical reasoning, data analysis, and experiments, they debunked each of the top ten "science" rumors one by one.
Zhang Na, head of Baidu’s search operations, shared that Baidu's data shows over 3 billion user queries each year aimed at verifying false information. To help users distinguish between real and fake news, Baidu launched the Baidu Rumor Platform last September. The platform collaborates with multiple authoritative sources to produce more than 100 debunked rumors daily. Looking ahead, Baidu is committed to supporting the monthly "Science" Rumors list by providing data and technological assistance, further promoting scientific literacy and public awareness.
