2017 top ten "scientific" rumors
In 2017, Baidu, in collaboration with the Beijing Science and Technology Reporter Editorial Association, unveiled the Top Ten "Science" Rumors of the year. These rumors spanned a wide range of topics, including food safety, health claims, and even space-related myths. Among the most talked-about were stories like "plastic rice made from seaweed," "watermelons that don't rot for 400 days due to preservatives," and "a drop in human health caused by certain factors." Other notable entries included "blood tests for cancer detection," "ineffective rabies vaccines," "freezing causing arthritis," and "not sitting in hair for months."
The list also featured rumors tied to current events, such as "the left brain controls images while the right brain is responsible for logic," "aliens on the back of the moon," "anti-gravity wave radiation suits," and the widely circulated claim about "Zheda University developing a 'Quantum Stealth Garment.'" These myths often gained traction through social media and online platforms, spreading quickly among the public.
At the event, renowned experts and academicians, including Quan Guangzheng from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chen Junshi, a food safety expert, and Zhang Shuangnan from the Institute of High Energy Physics, worked together to debunk each rumor using logical reasoning, data analysis, and experimental evidence. Their efforts aimed to educate the public and promote scientific literacy.
Zhang Na, the head of Baidu’s search operations, shared that Baidu handles over 3 billion user verification requests annually related to false information. To combat this, Baidu launched the "Baidu Rumor Platform" last September, partnering with multiple authorities to publish more than 100 debunked rumors daily. The platform aims to help users distinguish between fact and fiction. Moving forward, Baidu plans to continue supporting the monthly "Science" Rumors list by providing data and technological assistance, further promoting science communication and public awareness.
