The researchers found that 70% of used laptop batteries are enough to power LED lights. They disassembled the used batteries, removed the still-usable batteries, and used some extra (cells) to make a complete battery pack. If the LED lights are powered for 4 hours a day, these battery packs provide a one-year service life. 
In the initial test, the researchers provided the battery pack to five residents of Bangalore, India, for road lighting in slums or sidewalks. The test was very successful, and the upgraded version of the battery pack is now under test.

According to statistics, there are about 50 million pieces of discarded lithium-ion laptop batteries produced every year in the world, which are undoubtedly a threat to the ecological environment. But IBM researchers have recently discovered a way to take advantage of these batteries: they found that many used laptop batteries still contain usable batteries that can be used to power home lighting.
