The mobile phone screen market is expected to surpass the TV screen market for the first time in 2017
[Global Scientific Report] On August 27th, Yonhap News Agency reported that according to a recent study conducted by IHS Markit, a leading data research firm, mobile phone screen revenue is projected to surpass that of TV screens for the very first time in 2017. The gap between the two is expected to be around $5 billion, a figure that analysts believe will continue to grow in the coming years.

The report highlights how dramatically the landscape has shifted since 2010. Back then, TV screen revenue was more than quadruple that of mobile phone screens. Over the last seven years, mobile phone screen sales have surged at an impressive average annual growth rate of 17%, while TV screen sales have dropped by approximately 8% annually. By 2017, mobile phone screen revenue is forecasted to reach $46.56 billion, compared to $41.25 billion for TV screens. This marks a significant milestone, as mobile phone screens will officially take the lead from TV screens in terms of revenue generation.
According to the data company, this shift can be largely attributed to the advent of smartphones and their advanced ultra-high-definition display panels. When Apple and Samsung introduced their groundbreaking smartphone displays back in 2007, they quickly dominated the global market. These innovations not only revolutionized the way we interact with technology but also began to significantly erode the traditional dominance of TV screens in the consumer electronics sector.
As we move forward, it’s clear that mobile devices will continue to play an increasingly central role in our daily lives, further solidifying their place in the global economy. (Compiled by Intern Ni Jiamin; Reviewed by Editor Liu Yang)
This transformation underscores the rapid pace of technological evolution and the importance of staying ahead of market trends. For industries reliant on consumer electronics, understanding these shifts is crucial for maintaining competitiveness and innovation.
