LED backlight and lighting will become the two growth drivers of LED

Jian Yumei said that LED applications are very mature in displays, indicators, and lights, and LED lights will be introduced all over the world next year. LED lighting is also gradually developing in automotive lighting, but currently it is mainly based on interior lights and taillights, and headlights have yet to be developed. Backlighting and lighting are two major kinetics that will boost the future growth of the LED industry. Although LED backlights have successfully occupied the mobile phone and notebook computer markets, they have just begun to develop in the LCD TV LCD TV market.

According to the Samsung market survey, in 2009, the global LED-backlit LCD TV shipments were about 4 million units, and the penetration rate was only about 3%. The demand for LED usage in the global LED-backlit TVs was about 1.28 billion. It is estimated that the global LED-backlit LCD TV shipments will reach 25 million units in 2010, the penetration rate will increase to 16%, and the LED demand for backlights will reach 8 billion, which is five times higher than last year.

It is expected that by 2011, the global LED-backlit LCD TV shipments will reach 63 million units, the penetration rate will reach 35%, and the demand for backlight LEDs will reach 20.16 billion. In 2011, the global LED-backlit LCD TV shipments will be 120 million units, the penetration rate may reach 60%, and the demand for backlight LEDs will reach 38.4 billion. In 2013, the global LED-backlit LCD TV shipments will challenge 170 million units, and the penetration rate will reach 79%. The demand for backlight LEDs may reach 54.4 billion.

Jian Yumei pointed out that as the LED backlight TV market expands, the demand for LED and LED light bar will continue to grow at a multiple rate. At the same time, the backlight design of LED-backlit TV will be more and more simplified, and the LEDs used on each TV will be simplified. The number will be less and less, but the LED brightness requirements for backlights will be higher and higher, and the LED die size for TV backlights is becoming an inevitable trend. The higher the LED power, the greater the amount of current, and the requirements for heat dissipation and PCB technology will also increase.

In terms of lighting, Jian Yumei said that according to the statistics of the market, in 2008, global LED lighting has just started. It is estimated that the global LED lighting output value may reach 370 million US dollars in 2010 (optimistic up to 530 million US dollars), from 2014 to 2016. In the year, the global LED lighting application market will begin to take off. By 2018, the global LED lighting output value is estimated to reach 2.94 billion US dollars (optimistically up to 4.5 billion US dollars). In 2020, the global LED lighting output value will be 3.77 billion US dollars (optimistically reachable 5.6 billion US dollars).

However, lighting LEDs must use high-power LED products. At present, various manufacturers are actively developing high-power LED products with better heat dissipation. The current round-shaped LED die is currently the best thermal solution, but about high-power LEDs. Subsequent cooling, PCB manufacturers must still cooperate with the development of related cooling technology.
