GPU Computing Goes to AI and VR Nvidia BIRTV Media Communication Highlights
On August 23rd, the Beijing International Radio, Film, and Television Exhibition (BIRTV2017) kicked off at the China International Exhibition Center (Old Hall). NVIDIA participated in this event to showcase how their GPU rendering and VR technologies are being utilized in media, entertainment, digital content creation, and related workflows like architectural design, automotive R&D, and design. I was fortunate enough to visit NVIDIA's booth and experience the latest graphics and video technology while listening to insightful presentations from their team. This gave me a deeper understanding of the advancements in GPU technology.
One of the highlights of the exhibition was the keynote speech delivered by several NVIDIA executives, including He Qiqing, Director of Business Development at NVIDIA China; Zhang Wu, NVIDIA’s China Virtual Reality Business Development and Sales Manager; and Zhou Xijian, another NVIDIA China Virtual Reality Business Development and Sales Manager. Their talks covered the development and application of GPU-based artificial intelligence technology, GPU 360-degree high-definition video technology, and NVIDIA's virtual reality-aided design tool—Holodeck (a provisional translation).
First, the discussion focused on the development and application of GPU-based artificial intelligence technology. Mr. He shared some of the latest updates NVIDIA presented at the recent SIGGRAPH 2017 conference. Over the past two or three decades, we've witnessed major technological revolutions, including the rise of the internet and the mobile internet. The potential future shift towards artificial intelligence promises significant changes. Already, we're seeing the impact of the first two waves, enabling us to perform complex computations like big data analysis. AI technologies, particularly deep learning neural networks, are increasingly integrated into our daily lives, from intelligent translations to healthcare and smart city initiatives.
According to data, over 3,000 companies worldwide are actively investing in AI development. By 2020, robots are expected to handle 85% of customer service tasks. Robots won't just assist with inquiries but will also manage sales, shopping, and guide customers.
In the media field, AI applications focus on both visual and auditory aspects. For instance, after training on the works of ancient and modern artists, neural networks can mimic artistic styles, generating paintings based on input scenes. Imagine converting camera footage into Van Gogh masterpieces.
Media advertising is another suitable application. AI can analyze trademark visibility and duration in ads, determining their value and rewards. Companies like iQIYI are leveraging these technologies to rapidly review video content, achieving a 2-minute online speed that surpasses human capabilities.
In animation and film post-production, AI can synthesize scenes based on existing materials. For example, creating an 80s-style scene by teaching the computer to learn from old photos. In CG films, capturing actors' expressions and movements was once challenging due to limitations in sensor placement. However, NVIDIA and Remedy have collaborated to record videos showing human facial expressions, training neural networks to animate CG characters, significantly reducing the workload in anime production.
Regarding 4K and Blu-ray movies, while obtaining 4K TVs is straightforward, acquiring 4K film sources remains a challenge. BOE is using AI to upscale standard definition or HD video to 4K content, guessing details based on deep learning techniques.
Voice applications primarily involve customer service and voice assistants. Many companies use NVIDIA GPUs for speech recognition training, improving text and speech accuracy. AI can offer precise recommendations based on user profiles, aiding businesses in understanding consumer preferences.
Next, the presentation delved into GPU 360-degree high-definition video technology. Teacher Zhang introduced NVIDIA's tools for VR content development, emphasizing the VRWorks SDK, which enhances VR realism in four areas: 360 video, image rendering, sound effects, physical properties, and tactile sensations. The focus was on video capture.
Physical properties and tactile sensations simulate real-world object interactions, such as gravity affecting water surfaces or sounds when objects hit the ground. These effects are achieved using GPUs and algorithms, providing realistic sensations.
Sound effects, via VRWorks Audio, simulate real environmental sounds, allowing users to perceive distances and directions. Image rendering accelerates development, reducing completion time from months to weeks.
Video capture applications include VR broadcasting and 360-degree panoramic video. NVIDIA collaborates with panoramic camera manufacturers, offering SDKs for video editing. Last year, they produced 2D panoramic videos, while this year, they achieved binocular stereoscopic panoramic videos, showcasing enhanced computational power.
Key features of VRWorks 360 Video SDK (freely downloadable from the official website): (1) Real-time and offline video stitching; (2) Support for mono and stereo solutions; (3) Up to 32 channels of 4K video input.
Teacher Zhang demonstrated NVIDIA GPU rendering capabilities with a train model containing 150 million faces. Previously, two M6000 GPUs could only render 5 million faces. With the P6000 and VR SLI, performance increased ninefold, rendering 45 million faces. Adding Occlusion Culling boosted performance to 150 million faces.
Such rendering capabilities are beneficial for CAD design companies, highlighting NVIDIA GPU computing power and specialized rendering acceleration.
III. Virtual Reality Aided Design Tool - Holodeck (Provisional Translation as Holographic Deck)
Mr. Zhou introduced Holodeck, a VR-aided design tool. Holodeck originated in Star Trek movies and later appeared in Iron Man and Prometheus. While not a sci-fi device, it resembles virtual reality's visual effects.
Realizing Holodeck involves simulating the physical effects of entire scenes, requiring immense computational power. Decades ago, games were pixel-sized; now, VR games are highly realistic.
NVIDIA's Holodeck provides realistic feedback, offering force feedback upon touching objects, realistic visuals, and sounds. AI identifies spoken commands, generating 360-degree videos in real-time, presenting a realistic world across all senses.
At the booth, HTC Vive was available for experiencing Holodeck. It featured a super-running project file from a real sports car manufacturer, containing 50 million polygons. Holodeck generates real-time physical lighting effects, allowing detailed exploration of the interior and parts.
Holodeck's visual effects are based on real physical models, offering virtual interactions. Two people in different locations can collaborate virtually. This platform can also train AI robots, gaining operational skills in VR and directly importing data into real robots.
Physical feedback occurs when controllers touch virtual objects. A key feature is gaze point rendering, focusing on areas within the VR scene, enhancing realism.
IV. Media Questions
We first asked about GPU-based AI's standout features compared to similar products. Mr. He emphasized two main points: GPU programming advantages, including diverse toolchains, libraries, and ecosystems, as early researchers used GPUs for this research. Second, the rapid development of neural networks and related architectures, allowing NVIDIA GPUs to adapt to changing architectures and provide better versatility.
Regarding 360-degree video rendering SDK cooperation, NVIDIA provides open tools for download.
For panoramic video stitching, issues arise when someone moves between lenses. Mr. Zhang noted this relates to camera time synchronization errors.
Holodeck's multi-person collaboration requires network conditions. Powerful local NVIDIA machines can accelerate locally.
Holodeck is applied in engineering design environments, serving current manufacturing and design fields, solving real-time operations and multi-person collaboration issues in VR. Currently targeting the automotive industry, it can be applied to more fields with similar needs, like construction.
V. VR Experience Holodeck
After the Q&A session, I entered the Holodeck demonstration room. Staff helped me wear the Vive headset and provided instructions. Holodeck offers an interactive brush tool to draw 3D cages in VR, providing a good three-dimensional effect.
Other experiences included momentary movement to observe a sports car from multiple angles, modifying its color, using a perspective mirror to view internal structures, decomposing the sports car, and switching scenes to view different visual effects.
From an experiential standpoint, while Vive pixels were visible, the scene was realistic and immersive. Tracking was smooth, with no noticeable lag. Long-distance movement felt slightly different from reality but was manageable. Some visual differences arose due to gaze point rendering, affecting perceived depth.
Overall, Holodeck offers a visually convincing experience.
