Everlight, a leading Taiwanese LED packaging company, experienced a slowdown in revenue growth in 2018 due to increased competition from mainland Chinese manufacturers. The pressure on product pricing intensified, and the usual seasonal demand did not have the same impact as before. As a result, the company reported a 6.6% decline in annual revenue. Analysts also expect a significant reduction in profitability for the year.
Looking ahead, Everlight plans to continue adjusting its product mix to enhance profitability, especially in the face of ongoing competition from mainland players. However, short-term revenue growth is expected to remain cautious.
In recent years, Everlight has diversified its business across various applications. Currently, about 35% of its revenue comes from consumer electronics and mobile phone applications, 25% from backlighting, 20% from invisible products, and 15-20% from lighting applications. Another 5% comes from other niche markets. Among these, small-pitch LED displays, infrared LEDs, automotive lighting, and ambient or special lighting are key areas of focus for the company.
Although automotive lighting currently accounts for only around 5% of total revenue, Everlight has gained certifications from European, Japanese, and South Korean car manufacturers. The company has also improved its production capacity for automotive lighting products. It is anticipated that by the end of 2018, the share of automotive lighting could reach nearly 10%.
Regarding small-pitch LED displays, Everlight has a strong presence in this market. Major Chinese manufacturers of small-pitch LED displays are among its clients, and the company is gradually upgrading its product specifications to 0808 and 0606 sizes. This year, shipments in this area are expected to grow by approximately 20%.
As for Mini LED technology, which is set to enter mass production this year, Everlight is well-positioned to benefit from its experience in high-end small-pitch display markets. The application of Mini LED in outdoor billboards and commercial signage may bring new opportunities for the company.
Despite maintaining a leadership position in several key technologies, Everlight faces challenges such as increased competition from mainland Chinese firms, a shift in OEM orders toward local suppliers, and growing price pressures. Additionally, the limited market size and revenue contribution from automotive lighting and special lighting applications have contributed to the year-on-year revenue decline of 6%, marking the lowest level in four years.
The Lunar New Year holiday in February is expected to further weaken first-quarter performance. In the second half of 2017, Everlight’s quarterly revenues declined, with the fourth quarter reaching NT$6.725 billion, down 2.58% from the previous quarter. Annual revenue totaled about NT$27.337 billion, a decrease of 6.8%. Earnings per share for the first three quarters were estimated at around NT$2.20, and the full-year EPS may fall below NT$3, representing the lowest level in nearly five years.
