The transformer-type clamp-type ammeter consists of a current transformer and a power-breaking meter with a rectifying device. Figure 5-2(a) is an outline view of the clamp-type ammeter, and Figure 5-2(b) is a circuit diagram of the clamp-type ammeter. The current sensor core is in the shape of a jaw. When the handle of the clamp ammeter is clamped, the core is opened, and the current-carrying wire can pass through the gap opened by the core. After the handle is released, the core is closed and the wire with the current to be measured is passed. It becomes the primary coil of the current transformer.

The measured current generates a working magnetic flux in the iron core, so that an induced electromotive force is generated in the secondary winding wound around the iron core, and a current flows through the measuring circuit. This current is rectified and passed through the meter head according to different splitting ratios. The ruler is perforated at a current, so the reading on the meter is the current in the wire under test. The change in range is achieved by changing the shunt resistor by the transfer switch.
