Mobile phone manufacturers accelerate the deployment of the Internet of Things to seize the opportunity of smart terminals

In the wave of new mobile phone releases in the latest quarter, Samsung and vivo once again pushed their development in the IoT (Internet of Things) field to the forefront.

Mobile phone manufacturers accelerate the deployment of the Internet of Things to seize the opportunity of smart terminals

The development of domestic mobile phone manufacturers in the field of Internet of Things is most obvious with the advancement of Xiaomi, but the leading manufacturers including Huawei and OV are advancing layer by layer. In terms of overseas manufacturers, Samsung is an important implementation sample.

From the perspective of development methods, there are two types of platforms: closed and open. The former is dominated by enterprises, including absorbing ecosystem partners and self-developed and producing parts of smart hardware; the latter is based on OV and major platforms in July this year. The form of alliance promoted by home appliance manufacturers is gradually being implemented.

This is also considered to be a new business development trend for mobile phone manufacturers in an environment facing sales bottlenecks. But at present, the core pain point of the advancement of the Internet of Things lies in the understanding of interaction standards and protocol formulation between manufacturers to reach consensus, and gradually expand to form a real ecosystem. Only in this way can this business attract more third-party manufacturers to intervene and achieve a win-win situation in the future when the era of 5G and NB-IoT arrives.

Accelerate the advancement of IoT

Major mobile phone manufacturers are accelerating to seize the opportunity of smart terminals and seize the IoT track.

In July of this year, mobile phone manufacturers including OV, and home appliance manufacturers including Midea and TCL jointly announced the formation of the IoT Open Ecological Alliance and announced product plans. This means that the two major mobile phone manufacturers are accelerating the process of building the IoT ecosystem.

Prior to this, the ecological chain system invested by Xiaomi provided its innate advantages in entering the field of Internet of Things. According to the financial report, as of the end of the second quarter of 2018, there were approximately 115 million connected Xiaomi IoT devices (excluding smartphones and laptops), an increase of 15% from the previous quarter. Huawei is building an open ecosystem of HiLink.

Samsung, a major overseas manufacturer, proposed the SmartThings home IoT platform due to the group's multiple resource advantages, and announced at the recent new product launch conference that it will upgrade the performance of its voice assistant and create a Bixby+IoT ecosystem. According to reports, in addition to connecting to more than 60 devices such as Samsung’s own TVs and air conditioners, Samsung will also access IoT products from eco-partners. The first batch of IoT categories will include 6 Zigbee devices and 5 WiFi devices.

The evolution of "smart phones" undoubtedly paved the way for the creation of the Internet of Things ecosystem and became an important entry point. At the same time, as the mobile phone market enters a sales bottleneck period, the establishment of a diversified service system is also expected to bring imagination to the future development of the mobile phone industry. In this process, the sooner an ecosystem is built, the more competitive it is.

Liu Gengrui, an analyst at TrendForce's Top Industry Research Institute, analyzed to a reporter from 21st Century Business Herald, "As mobile phone manufacturers gradually deepen their deployment in the Internet of Things, it will be more difficult for other mobile phone manufacturers to get a share of the pie, because of the Internet of Things. It is non-standardized, and it requires a fairly extensive ecosystem and software and hardware integration capabilities to emerge in the market."

But obviously, the current layout of the Internet of Things is still in its infancy, and mobile phone manufacturers made this decision more out of the background of seizing the trend and having the innate advantages of sufficient consumer groups.

At the recent new product launch conference, the director of the vivo AI Global Research Institute explained to the media that this year, IoT-related smart hardware does have a growth trend, but this does not mean that it has become the "second battlefield" for mobile phone manufacturers. . "We don't think it will be in the short term. But in the long run, when artificial intelligence develops to a more mature stage, it will naturally be necessary to store technology and export products and services. Therefore, IoT connections and services must be done well."

The surrounding also explained that for the layout of smart hardware, including smart speakers and bracelets, vivo will make decisions based on market conditions. There is no absolute answer yet. At least for now, since the establishment of the aforementioned IoT Open Ecological Alliance, mobile phone and home appliance manufacturers are actively exploring landing solutions.

According to the surroundings, the cooperation plan is mainly settled on a set of standards for a single category to solve two industry pain points. That is, IoT manufacturers need to adapt to various closed and private ecosystems, but the things that consumers buy cannot be interconnected.

It is reported that at the beginning of the alliance, there were 7-8 industry manufacturers. In the last two months, vivo has all been well adapted to the equipment of various manufacturers. The prerequisite for adaptation is that the interaction standards and protocols have been defined, and only the internal Passed by a vote.

At the same time, the alliance is also seeking support from government agencies. "There are many protocols and ecosystems for the Internet of Things, but they are all privately owned by enterprises. Therefore, if some enterprises can form new and open alliances and rise to industry or national standards, government management agencies are also very willing to see such a situation." Said like this.

The agreement has yet to be expanded

Although the layout of the Internet of Things is far from being able to bring much profit boost to mobile phone manufacturers in the short term, it is still a promising direction in the future.

Zou Debao, a senior analyst at CCID Consulting, analyzed to a reporter from 21st Century Business Herald, "Smartphones are one of the main entrances to the IoT, and the connection is particularly prominent, and they will become the main medium for intelligent control."

In his view, the mobile phone layout of the Internet of Things is divided into three stages: the first stage is to solve the problem of smartphone battery life and multi-APP function; the second stage is to unify protocol standards and security standards, and establish an open cooperation model; The third stage will be to optimize the functional services of smartphones and build an IoT connection system. Based on this analysis, the current industry is already in the second stage of development.

"After the formal application of 5G technology and the completion of the overall layout of NB-IoT, it will be more beneficial for mobile phone manufacturers to intervene in the field of Internet of Things." Zou Debao told reporters that it is expected that by 2022, NB-IoT will be fully commercialized, and most of the Internet of Things devices will be Networking will be a harvest period for the layout of smart phones. "The entry of smart phones into the Internet of Things field will bring relatively predictable profits to mobile phone manufacturers in the next 10 years."

What needs to be dealt with right now is essentially still a universal agreement and standard problem.

Liu Gengrui pointed out that the Internet of Things requires a broad ecosystem. Participants are not only mobile phone manufacturers, but a large third party to join. This requires a relatively mature platform and environment for third-party vendors to access. "Therefore, a complete software platform, an operating system that is compatible with the Internet of Things and compatible with mobile phone control, and providing a sustainable and growing development environment will be problems facing mobile phone manufacturers."

In Zou Debao's view, the core difficulty is the different protocol standards and security standards of mobile phone manufacturers; at the same time, the battery life of smartphones, 5G applications and the networking of IoT devices are also objective elements that cannot be ignored.

This also makes the degree of advancement of the aforementioned alliance the focus of attention. In the face of inquiries from the media, the surroundings explained, “We can foresee that when the mindset is sufficiently open, in fact, the manufacturers of these IoT devices and the instructions defined under the new alliance should be compatible with each other. Because everyone is With an open mind, there are currently no resource barriers to operation and promotion." This has also become part of the future development strategy of mobile phone manufacturers. "We believe that AI and IoT are actually two things that cannot be separated from mobile phones and must develop together."
