Infineon's driver assistance system BGT24Axx RF components for blind zone detection

Infineon Technologies AG and the German automotive parts supplier Hella Group have developed an innovative RF component for radar sensors that effectively monitors blind areas in the rear of the car (blind area detection). The module integrates multiple previously independent components into one transceiver (both transceiving) to save space and cost, with better performance and lower power consumption. Thanks to the mass production brought about by the increase in efficiency, the driver assistance system can now also be popularized for low-end and mid-range models.

HELLA's 24 GHz radar sensor system for blind spot detection is extremely accurate. Regardless of the direction and speed of movement of the object, continuous radar scanning can accurately detect moving objects even in severe weather conditions, and further optimized antennas help achieve higher measurement accuracy. For example, when overtaking or changing lanes, the system will warn the vehicle from the rear. When parking, the radar can detect the situation behind the car to avoid collisions.

Infineon's new monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) from the BGT24Axx chip family is a key component in driving assistance systems that help increase system efficiency. They further improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and ensure the detection and signal transmission accuracy of blind areas. As a fully integrated transceiver, the Infineon MMIC contains all high frequency components such as crystals, transmission amplifiers and receive branches with low noise amplifiers and I/Q mixers. Hella's radar system can therefore be smaller, cheaper and consume less power. Infineon's 24GHz chipset further enables custom hardware configuration based on system environment and application scenarios.

The demand for safe driving and comfortable operation in the automotive industry is on the rise. With the 24 GHz radar system that controls the rear blind area, Hella and Infineon bring an efficient and reliable product to the automotive market. By 2020, the number of radar-assisted systems installed worldwide will increase from the current 14 million to more than 40 million, and blind spot detection systems play a key role (Strategy AnalyTIcs 2013). The Hella 3rd Generation Radar Module will be mass-produced from now on and can be used as an option for any model, including mid- to low-end models.
