Haswell plans to start production in the fourth quarter despite industry downturn

Despite Intel's third quarter profit of nearly 3 billion U.S. dollars, financial indicators in all areas have declined significantly, which proves that the days of the industry's bosses are not so good. Despite the slump in the PC industry, Intel will continue to introduce new products. The next-generation processor, Haswell, will be put into mass production in the fourth quarter of this year.

Intel CEO and President Paul Otellini commented: “Our third quarter (financial) results reflect that the bad economic environment is still continuing. In order to cope with sluggish market demand, Intel is taking various measures, especially starting from the end of the third quarter, which will significantly reduce wafer production capacity, and will maintain lower line utilization rate throughout the fourth quarter (AMD is not high). This is expected to reduce inventory levels by about $500 million.

However, Haswell's mass production will cause inventory to increase again. Intel CFO Stacy Smith pointed out: "With the launch of the code-named Haswell's next-generation microarchitecture products, we expect the inventory level to increase and it is expected to resolve in the first quarter of 2013."

Intel also declined to disclose when the Haswell processor was released for listing, only saying Haswell-based products will be available in the first half of 2013. According to the previous road map, Haswell may start publishing in March next year.
