Geotextile Thickness Gauge

Installation and Test Procedures

1. Instrument Installation:

1.1 After unpacking the instrument, use a clean soft cloth to wipe away any wood chips or dust particles. Place it on a stable work surface at an appropriate height, and put a soft and hard cushion under each of the four corners to ensure even support and stability.

1.2 Adjust the bottom corner screws to center the bubble in the leveler, ensuring that all four feet make firm contact with the rubber sheet.

1.3 Keep the accessory box that came with the instrument nearby for easy access during testing.

2. Test Procedure:

2.1 The operator must follow the relevant test method standards when sampling to ensure the samples meet the required conditions.

2.2 Hold the cam handle with your right hand and turn it counterclockwise to lift the pressure plate and the weight attached to its right side.

2.3 Remove the replaceable presser foot from under the pressure plate and choose the appropriate type based on the sample’s thickness:

- 0.5 mm: Suitable for testing geomembranes.

- 5 mm: Suitable for geotextile composite materials between 0.5–5 mm in thickness.

- 10 mm: Suitable for geotextile composites between 5–10 mm in thickness.

- 15 mm: Suitable for geotextile composites between 10–12 mm in thickness.

2.4 Clean the reference plate and the presser foot surface with a soft cloth. Place the presser foot back on the reference plate, making sure the triangular blade aligns with the corresponding groove under the pressure plate.

2.5 Select and install the dial gauge. Insert it into the watch frame hole, and move it slightly downward until the contact point touches the top of the presser foot. Adjust the position so that the distance is approximately 0.1–0.2 mm, then lock the nut and reset the dial to zero.

2.6 Gently lift the presser foot, place the sample between the reference plate and the presser foot, and lower the presser foot to apply a pressure of 2 kPa ± 0.01 kPa. Start the stopwatch and allow the sample to remain under pressure for 30 seconds before reading the dial gauge value.

2.7 Repeat the process for the required number of samples.

3. Choose Different Test Pressures as Needed:

3.1 For a test under 20 kPa pressure, repeat the steps outlined in 3.2.6. After completing this step, hang one weight on the hanging ring on the right side of the pressure plate, then turn the cam handle clockwise with your right hand. Once the weight is fully supported by the triangular blade of the presser foot, measure the time and record the dial gauge reading after 30 seconds of pressure.

3.2 For a test under 200 kPa pressure, repeat the same steps. Hang both weights (1 and 2) on the right-side hanging ring, turn the cam handle clockwise, and wait until the pressure is fully supported by the triangular blade. Measure the pressure time for 30 seconds and record the dial gauge reading.

4. All test results should be manually recorded and calculated. The final test reports and results must adhere to the requirements of the test method standard and production process specifications.
