Determination of UV Protection Coefficient in Textiles Using a Double-Beam Ultraviolet Spectrophotometer

Key words: UV-visible spectrophotometer; textile UV protection; analytical instrument; UV-1800PC dual-beam UV-visible spectrophotometer. This advanced device is widely used in various fields such as textiles, semiconductors, optical materials, and multilayer films. When ultraviolet (UV) radiation is applied to fabric, part of the light is absorbed, some passes through the fibers (including the gaps between them), and a portion is reflected. The higher the UV transmittance, the greater the potential harm to human skin. To evaluate the UV resistance of fabrics, spectrophotometric methods are commonly employed. A UV spectrophotometer serves as the light source, emitting a beam that is dispersed by a monochromator. The radiant flux transmitted through the fabric in different directions is measured using an integrating sphere, allowing for precise calculation of UV transmittance. This technique is essential for assessing the UV protection performance of textiles, ensuring they meet safety standards and provide adequate sun protection. The UV-1800PC model is particularly favored for its accuracy and reliability in these measurements. It enables researchers and manufacturers to determine the UV protection factor (UPF) of fabrics efficiently. By analyzing the spectral data, this instrument helps in developing more effective UV-resistant materials, contributing to better consumer safety and product quality.
