Maxim High Efficiency WLED Driver

Maxim Integrated Products introduces the industry's smallest and most efficient white LED (WLED) driver, the MAX8901A/MAX8901B. This family of devices can achieve efficiencies as high as 92% when driving 2 to 6 WLEDs. In addition to the industry's best efficiency, this series of 2mm x 2mm devices also has the industry's smallest solution size. The device operates at a fixed 750kHz (typ) switching frequency, allowing the use of 1μF and 0.1μF output capacitors. Designed for 2 to 6 WLED backlights, the MAX8901A/MAX8901B are ideal for battery-powered 1.5in to 4in LCDs such as smartphones, PDAs, portable multimedia players, GPS devices, and digital cameras.

The MAX8901A/MAX8901B provide a single input for enabling the IC and controlling LED brightness. The MAX8901A uses a direct PWM input to adjust the LED brightness so that the LED current is proportional to the PWM duty cycle. In contrast, the MAX8901B uses single-wire, serial-pulse dimming to linearly classify LED brightness into 32 levels. The full-scale LED current of the series pulse dimming is 24.75 mA, with 0.75 mA per stage. In addition to flexible brightness control, the MAX8901A/MAX8901B integrate reliable protection features: an internal soft-start eliminates inrush current during startup, input overvoltage protection, LED overvoltage protection, undervoltage lockout, and thermal shutdown. To reduce battery power consumption, this family of WLED drivers consumes only 0.1μA (typ) in shutdown mode.

The MAX8901A/MAX8901B are available in a space-saving, thermally enhanced, 2mm x 2mm, 8-pin TDFN package that is specified over the -40°C to +85°C extended temperature range. The chip starts at $1.25 (1,000 sheets, FOB USA).
