China's energy-saving light bulbs, the EU market prospects are bright

The EU implementation of the anti-dumping duty on energy-saving lamps in China starting in 2002 will expire in October this year. The European Commission will resolve this 66% anti-dumping duty this month.

According to the EU anti-dumping committee's vote on the termination of the above anti-dumping measures in July, 10 member states voted for it, and Germany, France, Hungary and Italy voted against it.

The countries that are in favor of terminating the anti-dumping measures include the 10 EU member states including the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark and Poland. These countries have been pressing the EU to urge the overthrow of the original anti-dumping ruling. Its position is supported by Philips, the leading manufacturer of lighting and lighting products in Europe, and General Electric, the US electrical giant. Philips only produces high-cost energy-saving lamps in Europe, and imports cheap energy-saving lamps from China to supplement the European product line; GE's business in Europe has also transformed, from producers to importers.

German lighting and parts manufacturer OsramOptoSemiconductor is the main supporter of the opposition camp. The company is a member of the large industrial group Siemens, and more than half of its energy-saving lamps are still produced in Europe.

Obviously, the different attitudes in retaining or canceling anti-dumping duties determine whether the current production and management methods and strategies of lighting products manufacturers in different countries of the EU conflict with or complement each other.

The governments of the Netherlands and other countries said that if the implementation of anti-dumping duties against China is terminated, the overall price of energy-saving light bulbs in the European market will fall, and the market share will also rise.

Some analysts believe that, given that leading companies such as Philips and General Electric support the withdrawal of anti-dumping duties against Chinese energy-saving light bulbs, European Commission Trade Commissioner Mandelson may announce the cancellation of the tax in the short term.
